Rome is not a museum you complete. It is a working city that happens to be built on older ones. People come for the obvious monuments, then stay for the walk between them — a fountain at the end of a lane, a plate of carbonara that was worth the wait, a church you entered only because the door was open. It suits travelers who can walk, who can skip a famous thing without feeling cheated, and who understand that the centre is both magnificent and heavily harvested. The practical reality is heat, pickpockets, and ticket systems that punish improvisation. Book the Vatican and Colosseum with a named official channel. Then leave room for a long lunch. Do not miss an early hour at the Forum or Colosseum, a proper Roman pasta, and one evening in a neighbourhood that is not next to a fountain on every postcard.
